Silence

The deathly silence

Between you being born

And you crying

Was the longest twenty seconds

I have ever endured.

The incessant noise from the corridors

Ceased

Along with the traffic

Of footsteps

And urgency

I held my breath

Choking with anticipation

And benumbing fear

And as you took your first

I lost mine forever
